ASE), http://videogames.yahoo.com/multiplayer, is a free multiplayer server browser for Battlefield 2 and many other games (you can also pay a subscription fee, I do, which gives you priority on their information server). Why use it over the in-game browser? Two reasons: you can skip all the splash and login and "here, buy this from EA" dialogs, and you can find exactly the types of games you want. The BF2 in-game server does have one major advantage: time to connection. If you try to join a game with just a single position or two open on a server, it's likely that ASE will not get you in, since it has to start up BF2, then connect. However, in that case you can simply go to the in-game browser and continue on, not needing to dork around with startup time-wasters.
Install ASE. Note that it'll find what games you have, and show folders on the left side of the program that have a variety of options for selecting games. However, to use the full power of ASE, you'll want to set up your own custom filters. Scroll down to the bottom of the list of filters. You'll see the folder "My Filters". Right-click on this folder and select "New...". In the dialog that pops up, make a name for your filter, e.g. "My BF2 filter". In the large box below, paste the following text:

(More about these settings below.) Hit "OK". You now have just made a filter. Now there's one more thing to do, if you want. Right-click on "Joe's great BF filter" inside the "My Filter" folder. Select "Custom config...". Put this in Cmd Line:
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\bf2.exe" +menu 1 +username YourUserName +playerPassword YourPassword
Obviously, put in your own login name and password in the right spots. Hit "OK". You're good to go!
Note: you can also do this sort of thing for your desktop icon for Battlefield 2. By doing so when you start up the game you won't need to login.
Now hit the "Refresh" tool button up top, the button with red and blue circling arrows. Behold, there are a bunch of games you can play. Just click on one to see what it's like, double-click on it to join. What's cool is that you'll bypass all the Battlefield 2 intro junk, the login screen, and the "News from EA" dialog. You'll actually start loading the game. You can go get a sandwich once you join the server and come back two minutes later without having to dork around in between.
Well, you still might have to mess around: the one downside is that selecting a server from ASE doesn't lock it in for you like the in-game one usually does. I tend to pick servers that are have 5 or more slots open. If you don't connect using ASE, no big deal, you're now in the in-game browser and proceed normally, without all the startup hassle.
The only bad news is that you have to quit BF2 to join a new server with ASE (unless you use the BF2Connector wrapper from http://www.digitalsoftware.se/freeware/?id=26). Alt-F4 to quit BF2 quickly, if you go this route.
Forbidden Knowledge
The title's just to get you to read further, I admit it. The ten lines of gobbledygook above makes a custom filter. Let's break it down, y'all:
1 if gamever != "1.1.2551.0" remove
This line's the most mystical. It's just the latest version of the game (V1.03), in DICE-speak. You can find this number by looking at the "gamever" value in the lower right whenever you choose a server.
2 if clients < "5" remove
If there are less than 5 people playing on a server, don't show it to me. Obviously, change this to whatever you prefer.
3 if needpass > "0" remove
If the server needs a password, don't show it.
4 if clients == maxclients remove
If the server is full, don't show it.
5 if pl > "40" remove
If packet loss is greater than 40%, don't show the server. This high a rate of packet loss means the communication line is poor and you're likely to lose connection, etc.
6 if ping > "250" remove
If the ping (length of time in milliseconds to the server) is too high, don't show the server.
7 if bf2_anticheat != "1" remove
If PunkBuster is off ("!=" means "not equal to"), don't show the server. There are hacks that get around PunkBuster, but this'll at least filter out most of the idiots.
8 if bf2_bots != "0" remove
If the game has bots in it, don't show the server.
9 if bf2_dedicated != "1" remove
If the server is not a dedicated server, i.e. it's some lame shared computer, don't show it.
10 if bf2_pure != "1" remove
If 0, this server is using non-standard settings, e.g. setting it to kick you off if you don't join a squad.
There are plenty of other characteristics you can filter on, e.g.
bf2_autobalanced - if 0, autobalancing is off. bf2_friendlyfire - if 0, friendly fire does not hurt your teammates. bf2_mapsize - like 32 player maps only? Use this one to filter, e.g. if bf2_mapsize != "32" remove bf2_ranked - a ranked server scores you points towards unlocks, etc., when you play on it. bf2_spawntime - usually 15. bf2_voip - if 0, voice over IP is disabled. roundtime - the number of rounds a map is played. Look for 3+ if you hate reloading after each fight.
That's about it, just pick your preferences. Personally, I like to add these lines:

but that's just me: I like autobalancing off (I hate getting autoswitched), I like ranking, I like friendly fire killing teammates (it's goofy otherwise), and I like multiple rounds per map. I set this up as another new filter. There's usually at least one good server for me with these settings. If not, I just pick my other, looser filter and choose a game from there.
