BF2:Anti-tank

Overview

Anti-tank infantry can take down a vehicle from a distance, which other kits cannot do. They are equally good against vehicles up close, and are also given a sub-machine gun. This machine gun is usually going to be of exceedingly poor accuracy except at very close range, even when fired in semi-automatic mode.

The unlockable weapon for the Anti-tank kit is the Striker-12, aka DAO-12, aka "The Streetsweeper". This shotgun is semi-automatic with a 12-round internal drum magazine. It reloads one shell at a time, so reloading takes a very long time (you may want to switch to your pistol if you can't reload in relative safety). Like other shotguns, this is extremely powerful at very close range, but useless outside that.

Using The Rocket Launcher

  • You have a slight ability to guide the rocket by aligning the crosshair (actually a circle) with your target. This can be done even when you're not in zoom mode.
  • You do NOT need to hold down the button after you click to guide the rocket. It will be guided no matter what, so try to make it hit before you start looking around again.
  • Guidance will stop if you want the missile to make hard turns (e.g. 90 degrees). So turn your sight slowly but steady, if you want to greatly change the heading of the missile.

Tips And Tactics

  • Much like in Battlefield 1942, damage to armored vehicles is location-based, as follows:
    • APC armor is more or less the same all around (including the underbelly), with the exception of the turret, which seems to have a bit better armor in all areas except the top and front right where the main gun is. Two direct rocket hits to the vulnerable body should be enough to disable/destroy an APC.
    • The tanks are more varied, with the front of the turret having the most armor, the front/top front of the tank body second, the side of the tank and the side/rear of the turret third, and the rear/top rear of the tank and top of the turret coming in dead last (most damage). Two direct hits to the top of the turret, the rear armor, or the treads should disable/destroy a tank. It takes four or five hits if you hit the front armor or the front of the turret. There is a supposed 'sweet spot' on the sides of the tank where the turret meets the chasis. There have been reports of one shot kills here.
  • Two rockets will kill a helicopter (possibly three for a Black Hawk, but it's likely that previous damage from small arms fire will have made up the difference). A good example of taking down a helicopter can be found in the video on this page (registration required).
  • One hit will take down a plane or a light vehicle such as the Hummvee or DPV.
  • When taking on opponents at medium range, the pistol is often preferable to the default MP5 sub-machinegun, at least for USMC anti-tank soldiers. It possesses relatively good accuracy, especially when aiming down the sights, and has a large magazine of 15 rounds. The MP5 is fine at close range, but its spread makes it difficult to hit distant enemies.
  • Just because you can guide the rocket after pulling the trigger doesn't mean you shouldn't lead, especially on choppers. Aim in front of them, then you have less distance to guide it.
  • The rocket trail disappears after some distance. Be aware that the rocket has not reached its range - keep aiming and you still will hit the target. Watch for the explosion to see where you hit.
  • Use cover effectively. Thin walls will protect you from counter fire from tanks and APCs while you wait for your rockets to reload. If you're hiding behind a building, don't always pop out at the same spot. Circle around and shoot from a different corner.
  • Don't fire when the turret is facing you. If a tank/APC only has a driver, they can't see you when the turret is facing elsewhere. Remember they have narrow fields of view. Many times you can get off more than one shot from the same spot with this tactic.
  • Most armor will hear a loud beeping noise when you have your crosshairs on them. This will alert them to your general presence. Sometimes this can be a good distraction for your squad, but if you want to catch a tank unawares with a nice easy shot just shoot the rocket above the target, and then lower the reticle at the last moment. This is also good for hitting the tank's weak spot - the top of his turret.
  • Try to always have a support soldier around you. Not only that he can give you excellent covering fire, he can also restock your missiles. And that is very important, especially when you are defending your position against an enemy tank rush. Anyway, anti-tank soldiers tend to run out of ammo quickly, especially for their SMGs. Alternately, call for more supplies using the "T" key.
  • Anti-tank is a nice one-shot kill weapon for infantry. Just remember to aim for the person's feet, not their body; the explosion will kill them.
