BF2:Assault

Overview

The Assault class is armed with a rifle that does a good deal of damage and is accurate, but not to the extent a sniper rifle is. The rifle also has a grenade launcher attached, which is used as a separate weapon. Also spawns with a single smoke grenade.

  • The United States Marines have the M16A2 (semi-auto/3-round bursts)
  • The Middle East Coalition have the AK-101 (semi-/full-auto)
  • The People's Liberation Army (China) has the AK-47 (semi-/full-auto)

Weapon Unlock: G3

The unlockable weapon for the assault class is the G3. It is a select fire rifle, with the ability to fire in semi-auto, burst fire and full-auto modes. With a 20 round C-mag, it is a very powerful weapon, and does more damage than the AK47, AK101 and M16A2, however it does not have an underslug M203 grenade launcher, the soldier is given ordinary hand-thrown grenades instead. However the range on the G3 is not as great as the other assault rifles, as it is only effective up to medium range, unlike the M16A2 which performs well at longer ranges. A powerful rifle, but any advantage gained from the added power is offest (and arguably outweighed) by the small clip and low accuracy.

G3 Controversy

Considerable controversy surrounds the G3, as many players believe the increased power of the weapon to be offset by its accuracy problems, small magazine, and the loss of the grenade launcher. Proponents argue that the accuracy of the weapon is acceptable when prone and looking down the iron sights, while detractors argue that the removal of the grenade launcher eliminates much of the offensive threat of the assault class. The small magazine remains particularly contentious, as it eliminates the ability of the player to use the weapon on fully automatic. This is compounded by the accuracy woes of the G3, viewed by many players as a powerful but innacurate alternative to the standard weapons. The debate remains active in many circles, and both the G3 and its standard alternatives remain in heavy use.

Tips And Tactics

  • If you see a target at long range, you can switch to single shot mode by hitting the "3" key again. In the lower-right corner of your screen, underneath your ammo numbers, you'll see a character signifying either "A" for automatic fire, "3" for burst fire, or "1" for single-shot, semi-automatic firing. Single shots at long range can be effective, especially when using the ironsights. Your gun is more accurate than you might think.
  • Use the grenade launcher to take out groups of infantry or light vehicles like dune buggies. Grenades do have a pronounced arc, so you'll need to aim above where you want your grenade to hit in most cases. This requires a bit of practice to pick up, so feel free to run around blowing up bots until you get the hang of it.
  • You have a smoke grenade. Use it to cover an advance on a flag or when you have to run across a wide open area, since you're much harder to hit when you can't be seen.
  • Believe it or not, your grenade launcher is a very effective weapon against transport helicopters like the Black Hawk. When the Helo is hovering near the ground, shoot a grenade into its interior. You'll see that nearly the whole crew will be killed.
  • The grenades are mostly ineffective against tanks, but work well against APC's and other vehichles of medium armour. For example - an anti-air vehicle will succumb to 3-4 grenades. But the grenades need to land on the less well armoured roof - not straight shots at the side.
  • (novice tip)Grenade aiming is easiest by using the gradiated lines on the sight. If your target is far away, use the lower smaller gradiations lower down than the centre of the crosshair. If the target is close, use the bigger, more central lines.
