BF2:Crash to desktop
From BattleWiki
The game has multiple different crash bugs in it. Encountered so far; end of round CTD, which seems to happen consistently on some servers - no problems on others.
- The Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti series video cards are unsupported as they lack 1.4 shader support. Attempting to launch the demo will cause an immediate crash to desktop. A makeshift fix is available at http://zox.game-deception.com/downloads/Direct3D/BF2ShaderMod.zip . Although the workaround results in numerous graphical glitches, it will at least allow the game to run.
- In the preview build I got at work, the game would crash anytime I applied to be a commander or used the Q-menu to Spot an enemy. Uninstalling and reinstalling got rid of the commander crash, but I still can't spot anything and have just unbound my Q key for the moment. We later learned that our copy was gold code, so here's hoping I don't run into this with a retail box...
- There have been reports of some people getting their GeForce 4 cards to work in BF2 (on low settings) by installing the omega video drivers. Get them at: http://www.omegadrivers.net/
- These drivers are compatible with all NVIDIA cards that use Detonator/Forceware drivers, it doesn't matter if they are DDR, SDR, PCI, PCI-E, AGP, Laptop, Retail or OEM.
- The Omega Drivers are compatible with all ATI Radeon cards: (it doesn't matter if they are DDR, SDR, PCI, PCI-E, AGP, Mobile, Retail, OEM or 3rd Party)
- You may crash if you do not have enough disk space. I (somehow...) literally ran out without noticing, and BF2 crashed to desktop several times. Free'd up 5gb or so, and my crashes are now over. Not sure whether it's memory related; I have 1.5gb. Did not recieve any errors.
Question: Why do you crash when making a selection from the main radio?
Answer: If you have assigned any of your movement keys (forward, backward, strafe left, strafe right) to the left mouse button, the game may crash immediately to the desktop. This is seen particularly when using the main radio which is bound to the Q key by default. Making a selection from the main radio requires a left mouse click, which under the configuration described above, will also initiate soldier movement. This conflict will likely cause an immediate crash to the desktop and Battlefield 2 will have to be restarted. To correct this, reassign your left mouse button association to something other than movement.
Question: Why does this seem to happen if the server is linux?
Further info: I'm running Debian linux (stable) and Battlefield II Dedicated Server v1.0.2442.0(IA-32) and all clients either get crashed back to desktop at map change, or boote4d to the opening screen of BF2 client.
If the server is running linux it can cause a crash to desktop for the connected clients. This is a bug has been documented and solved as follows:
1/ You will need shell access to the server. 2/ Edit //python/bf2/stats/endofround.py , with 'vi' or similar 3/ Stick a # in front of "host.gl_sendEndOfRoundData(dataString)" 4/ Restart - Tada!
This really does work, the only side effects is the stats shown whilst the map loads will be missing. Not ideal, but Im sure you will all agree, definately worth it Happy serving. - TeeCee / eXhumed (****.net UK server)
