Overview

Engineers are equipped with a wrench (to repair damaged equipment), land mines, hand grenades, and a shotgun. They are vitally important in ensuring radars and artillery stay active for the commander's use.

The unlockable weapon for the Engineer kit is the Pancor Jackhammer Mk3A1. This shotgun is fully automatic with a 7-round detachable drum magazine. As with the other shotguns, this is made for extremely close range encounters, not longer-range work. At close range, however, full auto mode liquefies targets.

Direct Combat As An Engineer

• The Engineer shotguns can be very powerful at close range. Due to their slow rate of fire, however, a one-hit kill is often necessary in order to survive direct combat with an enemy. To maximize the damage done to an enemy, try to hit him with as much of the shotgun's pattern (a random, widening projection of many small projectiles) as possible. Firing from close range will help one achieve this goal, as will firing at the area of the enemy's greatest mass, generally his torso/belly area. The shotgun will do excellent damage to an enemy's head, but only if you are a close enough range to impact a significant percentage of your pattern into the head. The range at which to do so is generally very close to the enemy, as the head is a small target that's often very difficult to hit.
• The shotguns are best used in CQB (Close Quarters Battle) situations such as alleyways, indoors, and generally < 10m ranges.
• When the necessity to engage an enemy at medium-long ranges becomes apparent, you're better off using your all-issue pistol, which is a very capable weapon.

Using Your Land mines Effectively

• Be careful when mining a base. Your land mines will blow up friendly vehicles too, and sadly, most drivers either don't look or can't see the warning icons. Make sure squad mates helping you defend a base are aware of your mines.
• Try and stagger your mines in a triangle formation so that teammates have the opportunity to maneuver (VERY carefully!) around them.
• If you throw a mine on top of a vehicle, it will explode as soon as the vehicle moves.
• Mines, friendly or not, can be removed by using your wrench. Much like with the Medic's defibrillator paddles, you should crouch or go prone to ensure contact, and then use your wrench on the mine. This takes a second or so to work, and is recognized by a doubled targeting circle.
• "Defusing" land mines with your wrench will add them to your inventory for re-distribution (up to a maximum of ~6 mines in your inventory), C4 cannot be "defused".
• Unlike the Special Forces' C4 charges, mines stay deployed even if you are killed.

Tips And Tactics

• Unlike the Medic and Support classes that benefit passengers in the same vehicle, Engineers do not automatically repair the vehicle they are riding in. However, they DO repair vehicles around the one they are riding in. Vehicles that are holding an Engineer (and therefore can repair other vehicles) will have a wrench icon.
• When in a transport helicopter, you can repair from one of the side passenger positions. Otherwise, you have to get out of the vehicle or have someone else repair it.
• Repair damaged artillery! Artillery is a powerful weapon. You should keep your team's artillery in good order. Repair destroyed artillery using the wrench.
• By the same token, make sure you repair a destroyed trailer or radar, or any destroyed bridges.
• A quick turn of the wrench will get artillery back up, or a bridge to span again, etc. But be sure to continue repairing it to bring it back to full health. If you don't, then although functional again the thing you repaired will be weak (you can often tell because when weak it smokes). If you don't fully repair, then it'll be easier for enemy Spec Ops to take it out again - they'll notice the smoke and will know that they can probably get away with just one C4 charge instead of two.
• If you plan to be a tank driver, playing as an Engineer can help keep you operational. While you won't automatically repair your tank while sitting in it, it doesn't take too long to hop out and patch things back up when you need to. Be sure to drive to a safe area before jumping out of the tank, and be sure to keep moving while repairing, or you risk getting sniped.
• Note: While it's GREAT to run up and repair a friendly tank in the heat of battle, it's NOT GREAT to stand around the friendly tank while repairing it, as you risk getting run over! Instead, try "escorting" the friendly tank while you drive a Humvee. This tactic keeps you safe from being roadkill, as well as being able to keep up with the convoy and keep friendly vehicles all around you steadily repaired.
• Consider playing as an engineer when you're the Commander. You can sit back out of the heat of battle and keep your equipment operational. This lets you devote more time to running the battle, and keeps you as effective as possible.
• When attacking a flag with a vehicle, drive it into a wall, hop out, and put a mine behind one of its wheels. Then pull out your shotgun, hide somewhere and start capturing the flag. The enemy may jump into your vehicle, move and get killed.
