BF2:Squad member

From BattleWiki

Overview

As a squad member, your job is to stay with your squad, keep each other alive, and fulfill your squad leader's orders. If you can't obey orders, form your own squad so you'll be in control, but don't just ignore your squad leader and do what you want. Your squad mates would much prefer that someone more inclined to work with them joined the squad.

Being an effective squad member

  • Do what your squad leader tells you to do. If you don't like his orders, tell him what you think could be done, but don't just go run off.
  • Always try to spawn with your leader, especially if he is far away from any of your captured points (and close to enemy flags).
  • Keep the squad leader alive. Think of it like this: You have unlimited lives (can respawn on leader when you die) but he has only one (has to respawn back at a point.) This is especially true if you are a Medic. Healing and reviving your squad leader is a top priority.
  • Use a kit (class) your squad needs. Most squads should have at least one Medic and possibly two. Having one or two Special Forces members is often a good idea as this will allow you to destroy enemy artillery emplacements, and the Special Forces class is a decent infantry combatant anyway. Otherwise, try to use a kit your squad does not already have people playing, unless you're in a special-purpose squad. There's nothing more frustrating than being unable to accomplish an objective because five of the six squad members are trying to play the same role. After playing the demo for a while it seemed as though not enough people use the anti-tank class, which is essential when a squad can be decimated by an APC or tank.
  • If you don't know what you're supposed to be doing, request orders (use your <Quick menu> menu, which is bound to 'T' by default, or just ask over VOIP). No one is going to criticize you for being confused or clueless as long as you actually want to help. Doing the WRONG thing because you didn't ask is much more likely to upset people.
  • If you see enemy activity, use your <Quick menu> menu, which is bound to 'Q' by default; hold down the mouse button on the big SPOTTED button in the middle; and choose the appropriate item. This alerts the whole team to the enemy in question.
  • Re-reporting the same enemy unit can be useful too. There appears to be a fixed time after a unit is reported that it stays on your team's radar. Re-reporting it seems to reset that time.
  • In general, talk and communicate. Better to call out too many things your squadmates already know than to remain silent and let someone get ambushed. Even if your squad can't use the info, if it's important your squad leader can relay it to the commander.
