BF2:Support

From BattleWiki

Overview

The support class is equipped with a belt-fed machine gun (the M249 SAW for the USMC, or the RPK for the MEC) and an ammo pack. In some squads, support kits can be very useful, resupplying quickly-depleted ammunition and laying down covering fire. If in doubt, ask your squadmates whether they could use support.

The unlockable weapon for the support kit is the PKM. This gun is fully automatic with a 100-round belt. It is very powerful, but has a slower firing rate than the RPK or the M249. It seems slightly more accurate while prone, however. It's capable of damaging vehicles and aircraft much more effectively than the standard machine guns.

DO NOT RUSH WITH THIS WEAPON. You must be a support player with this. That means you must act in support of the cause! Let your heavy hitters push ahead while you lay down the cover fire. This weapon is best used at medium ranges, and best used when you're not the primary target for the enemy. This means that you won't be taking fire from the more accurate rifles while you lay down your spray and pray.

Using Ammo Packs

  • Having your ammo pack out will resupply ammo to teammates around you. This includes all weapons they have, even ones they do not have equipped.
  • You can also throw ammo packs on the ground like medics can throw medkits. This will resupply a single person (whoever picked up the pack) instantaneously.
  • Don't be stingy! Just as a medic throws around medic packs for the quick healing of his squad, you should fairly frequently drop ammo bags for your guys. ESPECIALLY when you've got fellow AT guys, SpecOps, and Assault M203'ers around! Ammo bags help a defensive group a lot, especially when the CO can't always drop a supply crate.
  • Don't be too generous! Just as often as you throw down ammo packs, walk around with your ammo bag out so as to rearm all nearby friendlies as a group!
  • If you're in a vehicle, teammates in and around the vehicle will auto-resupply.
  • Special Forces players like having their C4 restocked. Assault soldiers like more grenades for their launchers. Snipers love having their bullets, grenades and claymores restocked. Anti-tank soldiers like more rockets too and Medics like Ammo for the Guns and Grenades.

Tips And Tactics

  • The SAW deals a lot of damage, but it's fairly inaccurate, and it takes a while to switch to it from another weapon. Make sure you have your SAW out if you expect enemies nearby. Resupply can wait until after the firefight.
  • Expect to get a lot of roadrash on your belly, because you'll be on it A LOT. Your finger shouldn't hit the trigger unless you're prone.
  • And when your finger does hit the trigger, hold it down like it's trying to get away! With the Support class LMGs, you want to use extended bursts. It's about 4-5x the bullets of a rifle burst (ie: rifle burst = ~3-4 bullets. LMG extended burst should = ~12-16 bullets) As you play, you'll learn the feel of the weapon and recognize it's sweetspot during the burst. It's the point where you'll KNOW that you're going to riddle your target with bullets during that extended burst.
  • For base defense it can be advantageous to lay prone in a corner away from the flag. Because of your weapon's firepower, when insurgents arrive to liberate the flag in the name of their faction you can quickly mow them down. Beware of enemies that have respawned after being killed by you, they have been alerted to your position and will come for you if you do not vary where you are watching the flag from.
  • Cover and concealment can increase your kill rate drastically. Get some pointers from your fellow snipers and take advantage of concealment behind grass and brushes as well as using cover behind blockades or corners. A well concealed support soldier is just as if not more dangerous than a nested sniper.
  • Choose your battles! Don't engage from too far away, don't go stomping through hotzone alleyways. You want engagement ranges of ~10-75m, ~100m if you're brave. Keep yourself situational, and aware of your surroundings.
  • Your LMG is not meant to be accurate, so don't get your hopes up. Understand how this class should be played, and you won't be disappointed. Sure, the Desert Combat LMGs were godly, but this isn't DC. LMGs are meant as suppression fire, or saturation fire. Meant to keep the enemy's heads down while your Assault/SpecOps/Engineers push forward with their heavy hitting weapons and grenades.
